Guest Blogger: Fruits of Our Labor II + Vocab Lesson
I know I share many things with Jen. (DNA and short legs are just two of them.) We also share recipes, gossip, laughter, tears, indignation, political leanings, and parenting tips. Something else we have in common is a desire to grow things in the dirt. This year our garden was a bit sparse. We blame it on the torrential rains all Spring that made it tough to actually plant anything that could withstand three inches of standing water for what felt like weeks. The root vegetables, however, did very well. We have had some enormous beets: fun to grow and to stain our hands, but the excitement over magenta colored food ended at the same moment the kidlets touched the tuber to their tongues. We have also had a crazy crop of double carrots. For whatever reason, most of our carrots split off into twins...much like Samantha and Sabrina! We did, however, have one orange root that split its zygote into thirds. Yes. A carrot triplet. Now, Jen and I also share the idea that you use teachable moments with your children as they sprout up. So when I was washing the dirt from the carrots, Miss M hands me our triplet (which is currently in cryogenic storage awaiting an auction on Ebay :) and sort of giggled. I laughed much louder and called the veggie "obscene." She asked me what that word meant, and I handed her the carrot, "THAT is what obscene means." "Ooooohhhhhh!" she replied, and then laughed so hard she almost fell over running to teach the boys a new vocabulary word. --Auntie G
